Teaching and Learning Summer PD
Using ACT Score Reports to Inform Instructional Decisions
Join Alex Pritchett, an assessment specialist with the Arkansas Department of Education, for a training designed for teachers and administrators in grades 4th-11th.
In this session, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how to analyze a student’s ACT score report and use this information to guide instructional practices and college & career planning.

Are you curious what to do now that you have received your High-Reliability School books? Come learn about it from Dr. Mike Ruyle, an author and consultant with Marzano Research.
High-Reliability Organizations (HROs) continually pursue error-free performance and take proactive steps to prevent failure. In the era of accountability, schools are expected to be HROs. The Marzano High-Reliability Schools framework provides a clear blueprint for this purpose. This workshop will introduce school leaders to five levels of high-reliability schooling and the use of leading and lagging indicators as tools for strategic planning and monitoring school progress.

Implementing Tasks in the Math Classroom
Before, During, and After the Task – You have a task, but now what?
By using the before, during, and after approach, teachers will have a structure for implementing tasks. Teachers will find connections among formative assessment, Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices, and Standards for Mathematical Practices. Resources for finding tasks will be shared. This session is designed for middle-school math teachers.

Book Study of Disrupting Thinking: Why HOW We Read Matters
Participants will receive a copy of Disrupting Thinking: Why HOW We Read Matters by Kylene Beers and Bob Probst and participate in a book study emphasizing how critical it is that we teach students how to approach and read complex texts. This session will be led by ADE Literacy Specialist Connie Echols.

Instructional Strategies for Gifted Students (Elementary)
Spend a day learning and practicing classroom strategies designed to help increase the achievement of your advanced learners and provide them with the opportunity to learn something new each day. From bell-ringers to differentiation, best practices to use with advanced learners will be shared along with techniques to address their affective needs.
Topics include using essential questions, flexible grouping, curriculum compacting, thinking skills, genius hour, mindset, performance tasks, problem-solving, increasing self-efficacy, menus, tiered lessons, and learning contracts. Dr. Mary Kathryn Stein will provide numerous tools to use to support your high-ability learners.

ADE has partnered with ACT to provide a one-day training centered around the design, scoring and reporting of ACT Aspire assessments and provide lessons that can be used in the classroom to help promote student success on these assessments. Participants will hear from experts at Pearson, ACT, and state content specialists about activities that can be incorporated into their classrooms to support success on the ACT Aspire assessments. This workshop is intended for ELA classroom teachers in grades 6-8.

Participants will explore IEP resources needed to ensure IEP goals are aligned with Essential Elements. Teachers will have the opportunity to delve into the DLM website, professional development website, and Kite portal. The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) in conjunction with ACT Aspire has developed a 3-hour training to prepare districts for these changes.
Attendance at the training is required for the district test coordinator in each district or public charter school. The DTC may bring a team of district or building personnel who will help plan for and train test administrators.
NOTE: Participants will need access to computers for this training.

Instructional Strategies for Secondary Classroom Teachers
In her highly engaging and interactive presentation, Polly Patrick of ICLE, will share strategies for effective differentiation and model how to structure the secondary classroom for maximum learning. This session will draw an explicit connection between differentiation and improving student engagement and providing more rigorous and relevant learning through researched-based teacher moves. Polly will challenge educators to evaluate their own experiences and strategies to examine how these relate to their day-to-day practice.
